Poker is a card game played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. Players bet into a communal pot during the course of a hand. The player with the best hand at the end of the betting wins the pot.
Card suits are arranged in an alphabetical order from the lowest to highest value: Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades. In some games, no suit is higher than the others.
Cards are ranked as follows: Ace (the highest), King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 (the lowest). There are also game variations in which the Ace is the lowest.
A poker hand contains five cards. The highest hand wins.
Some poker games add the use of Wild Cards. A wild card can either be an extra card added, like the Joker, or a certain card in the standard deck chosen for a specific game. A wild card can take whatever rank or suit you choose.
The number of cards dealt depends on the game being played. For example, for the 5 Card Stud, you are dealt five cards. For the 7 Card stud, you are dealt seven. For the common poker game, the Five Card Draw, each player is dealt 5 cards, face down.
Betting
The dealer initiates a new hand and begins the betting rounds. Each player may make any of these moves during a given round:
Check or Pass. A bet of zero that does not forfeit interest in the pot. Players may no longer check once an opening bet has been made.
Bet or Raise. A non-zero bet greater than preceding bets. With this move, all successive players must match or exceed the bet, or else forfeit all interest in the pot.
Call. A non-zero bet equal to a preceding bet, maintaining the player's interest in the pot.
Fold. A surrender of interest to vie for the pot. The player discards his cards and previous bets, and is no longer a part of the hand.
Standard betting proceeds clockwise from the dealer until each player has either called all bets or folded. The rules for specific games may limit the number of raises allowed. But if only two players are in the pot, they may keep raising each other until one drops out.
The sequence of dealing cards and number of betting rounds differ in each variation of poker. At the end of the last betting round, all players left in the hand have a showdown and whoever has the best hand is awarded the pot.
During the showdown, the player who made the last bet or raise is obliged to show his hand first. The other players then take turns clockwise, either to show their hands or fold. Not all hands will reach the showdown, often a player will win because all the others have folded.

The deal rotates clockwise and whoever is dealing the cards decides which variation to choose among the many. This dealer declares his chosen game, and players signal their agreement by putting their ante in the pot.
