World's Greatest Poker Players

From Johnny Moss to Johnny Chan, a few distinct names ring the loudest in the highly thrilling world of poker. These are the world's poker greats, who have graced the most formidable poker tables with their presence to create some of the most memorable moments in tournament poker history. Be inspired by classic poker legends the likes of Moss, Amarillo Slim Preston, and T J Cloutier who consistently wowed the crowds at major poker tournaments like Benny Binion's World Series of Poker (WSOP) since the 1970s. Be dazzled by modern-day poker greats like Johnny Chan whose winning hand at the 1998 WSOP final table is now immortalized by Hollywood. Who could be next? Could it be Chris Moneymaker, who went from an unknown to a household name when he defeated no less than Johnny Chan to become the 2003 World Poker Champion? Could it be the next televised champion at the World Poker Tour (WPT)? Hold your breath for more—that's what poker is often about!

Featured Poker Great: T J Cloutier

One year in tournament poker history, T J Cloutier flopped three straight flushes holding the J-9 of clubs. If a no limit Hold'em player's two hole cards happened to be the J-9 of clubs, it would since be called a "T J Cloutier". And pretty much like the 10-2 being named the "Doyle Brunson" after the cards he was holding when he won his two World Series of Poker titles, you know that you are an all-time legendary Texas Hold'em player when a starting hand becomes named after you.

T J, a former CFL tight end, can sure be intimidating in person, what with his menacing presence and hands the size of waffle irons. An oft-told story about him goes that a dealer once mistakenly mucked his cards on the turn when he was holding the stone nuts. Only one other player was left in the pot, who did not realize what had just happened. Capitalizing on his own enormous hands, T J kept on betting his hand, and managed to trick this other player into thinking that he was still holding his cards behind them. The poor player folded on the river, earning T J what is known as a mixed-moral victory.

One of the best tournament poker players of all time, T J has won over 50 major events with buy-ins of $500 or more. He holds an impressive record at the WSOP. Although he has yet to win the big one, he is consistently in the mix at the main event and has had four agonizing Top 5 Finishes at the WSOP.

T J has written several essential guides to playing poker, containing truly valuable pieces of advice. One of them is on whether to concentrate on side games or tournaments. He has this to say: "There is so much dead money in tournaments that good players have a huge overlay, especially in pot-limit and no-limit games, because the skill factor is so much higher in these games than in limit."

A poker legend who competes ferociously to this day, T J Cloutier remains to be a major player in any no limit Hold'em event and is widely regarded as one of the best poker players the world has seen.
