It was the early 1900s in Odessa, Texas. Johnny Moss was 10 years old, and playing his first game of cards with a pack of cheats and grifters. He watched every play, saved them in memory, immersed himself in the tricks of the trade, like bottom dealing and card marking, in the raw, with no aid whatsoever of technology. It would be the foundation on which he would master poker strategy and the behavior of poker players.

As a teenager, he kept an eye on poker games run in local saloons, making certain they were on the up and up. Not long after, he was ready to take his show on the road, seizing every opportunity he encountered to play poker. Back then, in his younger years, Johnny made enough money playing honestly; cheating did not seem worth the trouble. But all that time, he sharpened his eye until it became second nature to tell the crooked games from the clean.

At the peak of his career, Johnny shared tables with the biggest names of his era, including the legendary pioneers of Las Vegas. For a few years, he lived in the "Bugsy Bungalow" at the Flamingo. He had been known to have a lengthy and mutually beneficial relationship with the Horseshoe Club's Benny Binion, who constantly backed Johnny, money-wise.

Johnny, backed by Benny, made what was arguably the single-biggest poker payday in history. He bled prominent gambler, Nick "The Greek" Dandalos, himself legendary for making astronomical wagers in the Las Vegas casinos, out of reportedly $4 million.

Johnny Moss holds three World Series of Poker world championship titles at No Limit Texas Hold'em: 1970, 1971, and 1974. He was inducted to the WSOP Hall of Fame in 1979. He lived in Las Vegas until his death in 1997.
