Johnny Chan, a.k.a "The Orient Express", rocked the highly competitive world of tournament poker like no one before him in the late 1980s. This world-famous player threatened to dominate the poker scene when he bagged back-to-back championship titles at the World Series of Poker in 1987 and 1988, in the latter year stealing the thunder from top poker player Erik Seidel in a hand now immortalized in the movie "Rounders".

In the historic year of 1988 for Johnny, Erik Seidel had been widely acknowledged to have played the best poker at the WSOP and had been leading the tournament events for the most part. But in the final hand, Johnny flopped a straight and induced Seidel to go all-in with a pair of queens. The tournament was over and Johnny was a repeat champion. He made a delightful cameo in the movie "Rounders", where his winning hand had been immortalized, being beaten in one hand by Matt Damon's character to establish this character's strengths vis-a-vis the world's greatest.

Johnny was bent on three-peating in the 1989 WSOP main event but came unstuck against brash, then-24-year-old Phil Hellmuth, whose obnoxious ways in poker player fast became legendary. That year, Johnny finished second to Hellmuth's pocket nines.

Johnny has earned in excess of a reported $60 million in the course of his extremely successful poker career. Spot a red Mercedes SL parked in front, with the vanity plate reading 333JJ, at any casino parking lot and you know that "the Orient Express" is in the house. The six houses he happens to own even match up nicely with his six kids.

2003, though, was not a very lucky year for Johnny. Even his lucky orange and diamond rattlesnake ring could not hold to this complete poker unknown who won his WSOP main event seat from an online poker tournament site in which he invested only $40 and was playing at the final table for surely the first time. The man in question: Chris Moneymaker, who won $2.5 million to become the 2003's World Poker Champion.

Losses aside, Johnny Chan is arguably the one poker player that most Americans could name. Respected yet feared by most other players, he is the man everyone wants to take down. Johnny ranks as the all-time first in money won at the WSOP, and is the winner of seven WSOP bracelets thus far. He was inducted into the WSOP Hall of Fame in 2002.
