With his homespun cowboy drawl and a bona fide cowboy look complete with the word "SLIM" stitched down each side of his cowboy boots, Texas native Amarillo Slim Preston is no doubt the personification of Texas Hold'em. Doyle Brunson may be called the father of this game, which is widely considered as the world's most popular poker game today, but Slim is certainly deemed as the grandfather of Texas Hold'em.

Thomas Austin "Amarillo Slim" Preston is practically the founder of Texas Hold'em, being among the game's original exponents way back when it was still played in a near-illegal fashion by a handful of drifting gamblers. With a ruthless game play that makes him very dangerous to play against to this day, he quickly established himself as one of the greatest personalities in the world of professional poker when he won the third World Series Of Poker held in 1972.

Following his winning $80,000 at the WSOP final event, Slim wrote the book "Maverick Poker" and thereafter did the rounds of talk shows to promote it, including extremely well-received guest appearances at Johnny Carson's show. Not only did he make appearances on the Tonight Show eleven times, 60 Minutes did three pieces on him as well. These were high-profile exposures for Slim that surely helped spur public interest in tournament poker, and put the WSOP, the Horseshoe Casino where it was held yearly, and of course, Texas Hold'em right on the map.

Amarillo Slim Preston, WSOP world champion of 1972, was inducted to the WSOP Hall of Fame in 1992 . A living legend and still in tiptop shape at age 80, Slim remains revered in his home state today. He claims that any mail addressed to "Slim, Amarillo TX" will find its way to him, and this all-time world-legendary poker player is most likely right.
