Poker Strategy for Draw Poker

Draw Poker is among the most widely known poker games in the world, and often used in movies involving poker play scenarios because of its simple rules that are easy to learn. In online poker tournament sites, it is the world's most popular poker games like Texas Hold'em and 7 Card Stud that draw the biggest crowds and provide the highest traffic on-site at peak hours. The same is true in top live poker tournaments like the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Benny Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas or poker on television at the World Poker Tour (WPT). Not many of these poker tournaments offer Draw Poker as yet but the game is big at more intimate poker tables in public card rooms at casinos worldwide and especially among friends playing home poker for fun. Winning big at Draw Poker is all about knowing when you should stay or go, understanding your chances, and folding when you ought to. You might want to read the rules first , or just get to the strategies then play poker already to test what you've learned right away.

Draw Poker Tactics

The Winning Opener
What are the chances that your opening hand is a winning hand? Consider: the odds are 1 in 650,000 that you will have a royal flush, 1 in 700 for a full house, 1 in 510 for a flush, and 1 in 2.4 for a pair. Clearly, the more players there are at the table, the lower the relative value of the lesser ranked hands.

In other words, if you don't have all that much to begin with, the chances are just as little of improving your hand and having one higher than the others in the end. For example, more players means more hands having a pair, significantly lowering the value of any pair you have. So if you do not have a pair or better, or four cards to a flush or straight, fold and get out. At Draw Poker, you will be folding most of your opening hands because, most of the time, that is the better move.

The Winning Two's
Now, having a hand to build on then begs the question: the pair plus the kicker, or just the pair? The odds almost always favor tossing the kicker. Your chances are 1 in 5 to make a two pair through to 1 in 46 to draw one card and make a three of a kind with a kicker.

It follows that a better opener has a better chance of being improved. But trying to build on a three-card flush or straight is simply a risk not worth the pot.

The Winning Four's
You have 1 chance in 4.5 of ever drawing one card to your four-card flush, 1 in 11 for a straight open on the inside, and 1 in 46 for a straight flush open at one end or open on the inside. With these chances of completion on the draw, you must always weigh the prized pot relative to the money you're actually putting in to stay in the game.

For example, that 1 in 4.5 chances for a four-card flush will cost you $20 to stay in. So the pot will have to earn you $90 or better (4.5 x $20), on top of your ante and bets thus far, for it to be profitable. If the risk isn't worth the pot, discontinue.
