The Quest Poker Tourney Sets $15 million Grand Prize
$15 million grand prize. That is what's at stake in the largest poker tournament in history dubbed, The Quest.
Presented by the Las Vegas-based PokerQuest Entertainment, The Quest is set for January 2006 and will be held at The Palms Hotel with a tournament buy-in of $250,000.
Already, the line-up includes 5 World Champions, 8 World Series of Poker Bracelet winners, 3 World Poker Tour champions, and some of the largest cash players in the world. Celebrities already contracted to play are James Woods, Michael Vartan, and Mimi Rogers.
The Quest doubles the $7.5 million prize from the recently concluded WSOP. The $15 million dollar prize for this tourney's champion is the highest first-place professional poker pay out in the history of the sport. The tournament buy-in also is ten times higher than the sports previous record.
The list of "great players" already contracted to play include Chris Moneymaker, Sam Farha, Scotty Nguyen, Eli Elezra, Johnny Chan, Phil Helmuth, Amir Vahedi, John Juanda, Phil Laak, Phil Ivey, David Levi, Erik Seidel, Chip Reese, Annie Duke, Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman, T.J. Cloutier, Mel Judah, Howard Lederer, and Daniel Negreanu.
Unlike many of the current tournaments, the Quest will feature only 100 players, at ten shoot-out tables. The winner from each table advances to the final table. The ultimate winner will take home $15 million dollars after beating the 18 other players.
Australian poker player, Joseph Hachem, grabs the $7.5 million pot and wins the 2005 World Series of Poker World Championship title on Saturday, July 16 at Binion's Horseshoe.
Like past champions, Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer before him, Hachem was a WSOP first timer, but the difference is Hachem, and runner-up Steve Dannenmann, was part of the less thatn 10% who actually bought in direct, and paid $10,000 to enter the event. Unlike the two who won their seats from a $40 online satellite tournament.
Along with the cash, Hachem also won the coveted white gold and diamond bracelet. Add to that beating the 5,619 participants to the No Limit Hold'em main event, including some of the toughest poker pros in town.
Doyle Brunson makes a Play for the World Poker Tour
Poker News - A true legend of the game is putting his money where his heart is. Already having made history at this year's World Series of Poker by winning his tenth bracelet, Doyle Brunson is looking to make poker history yet again.
The poker heavyweight is leading a group of investors who have made a $700 million cash offer for WPT Enterprises Inc., the owner of the World Poker Tour franchise.
Word spread quickly about the bid at the end of the week and sent WPT stocks soaring to a record high, increasing the market cap by more than 50 percent and sending its NASDAQ value to $27.60.
Brunson and company's unsolicited bid offered a 100-percent premium over WPTE's closing price of $17.75 on Thursday. The California-based WPT Enterprises was founded in March 2002 and made its public trading debut last August, when it opened at $8 per share. The company reached its previous high last month when shares jumped to $24.40.
Trading of WPT Enterprises was halted briefly on Friday afternoon, as shares had risen over 60% in value on the news of Brunson's bid.
According recent company data, the majority of WPT stock is owned by two stakeholders, Lakes Entertainment Inc., which owns 62 percent, and co-founder and Chief Executive Steven Lipscomb, who owns 8.2 percent.
WPT is known for marketing its WPT gaming products and for its hit series on the Travel Channel. The World Poker Tour is also broadcast in 60 different markets.
Brunsons's bold move surprised WPT officials who have yet to respond to the offer. 'This was a total surprise. The board will review this bid,' said company spokeswoman Jackie Lapin.
At 71, Brunson shows no signs of slowing down and his offer for WPT Enterprises only furthers his legend in the poker world."
